A Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a penchant for hot dogs has come out as top dog at the annual Corgi Derby at Musselburgh Racecourse.

Three-year-old Islay was cheered over the finish line by owner Carolyne Ricardo, a New Yorker who is a vet at Glasgow University.

The annual event began in 2022 to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and saw 50 dogs from as far afield as Cornwall apply to take part in the 70-metre race, with a ballot taking place to select the final 14 racers.

Owner Carolyne, who encouraged Islay over the finish line with morsels of hot dog, said she was surprised her pet took home the top prize.

“She’s such an active dog, so it was nice to see her win the race. It was great,” Carolyne told STV News.
