Liverpool are continuing to distance themselves from the prospect of Xabi Alonso taking over as manager this summer.

The Reds have had a terrible season as Premier League champions, leading to a feeling that Arne Slot could be sacked at the end of the campaign.

Xabi Alonso would be favourite to take over from Slot, but, according to The Athletic, Liverpool insiders are nonplussed by suggestions that the Spaniard is set to arrive.

Although many Liverpool fans would be delighted to see Slot removed from his position as head coach at Anfield, the club’s owners are reported to hold an opposite stance.

The Athletic reiterate this on Friday, claiming that FSG remain ‘fully supportive’ of Slot, believing that circumstances have conspired to make his job more difficult this season.
