Suggestions that Xabi Alonso could replace Arne Slot in the Liverpool dugout have really ramped up in the last 24 hours.

Alonso has been linked for a while, but a report in Germany on Wednesday seemed to suggest he was now ready to return to Anfield and become their new coach for the 2025/26 season.

However, we have since seen David Ornstein come out and say Liverpool are backing Slot, while a fresh update claims rumours about the Spaniard taking the job are not true.

Lewis Steele provided an insight when answering questions for the Daily Mail this week.

When asked about the Alonso reports coming from Europe this week, he stated: “But it is not true that Alonso has agreed to join Liverpool.”

Like Ornstein, he also reaffirmed Liverpool’s commitment to their current head coach.

He continued: “The club are backing Slot – for now at least – though many Premier League sides will know it might be this summer or never with the Basque coach, who will surely be snapped up over the coming months.”
