We all know how the players who almost got us over the line were supported.

But this 22-year record is the real legacy.

It is the legacy this board will carry long after individual directors have left Celtic Park.

And the failures haven’t just come in knockout rounds. There have been earlier failures, some of them so damaging that they still make you want to punch the wall when you think about them.

Foremost among those are the five consecutive failures to reach the Champions League group stages through the qualifying rounds.

We were never ready.

We were never properly prepared.

And far too often we went into those ties under-resourced.

Yet the board congratulated itself on the approach.

When you talk about mismanagement at Celtic, many people immediately recoil. They don’t want to hear the word. They don’t want to see the evidence.

The problem is that European football keeps providing that evidence.

When you see Bodø/Glimt beating Inter Milan, when you see smaller clubs navigating qualifying rounds with confidence and purpose, you begin to understand something important.

The challenge Celtic face is not impossible.

It is not insurmountable.

We are restricted by our own lack of imagination. Our own lack of vision....
