It’s not often that Evertonians agree with a Liverpool legend, but Jamie Carragher got it spot-on when speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football this week.

In discussion with Edwin van der Sar, when naming his top 10 all-time Premier League goalkeepers, one-club man Carragher, who made 737 appearances for the Reds, spoke about Neville Southall’s achievements.

The former Wales international was placed eighth on his list (van der Sar was sixth) but as the Bootle-born pundit explained, that was because the Premier League era from 1992 onwards came later in Southall’s career, and from approximately 1985-1990, he felt the Blues ace was the best goalkeeper in the world.

Carragher reckoned that the star from Llandudno was one of four truly ‘world-class’ players he felt Everton have had throughout their history. The other three on his list were Dixie Dean plus World Cup-winning pair Alan Ball and Ray Wilson.
