Yesterday, the world of football delivered a genuinely stunning piece of news. More importantly, it is the kind of development that should force some people to rethink how they view Celtic and its long-term direction.

UEFA has reached an agreement with Real Madrid, the last club still clinging to the European Super League fantasy. Madrid has now abandoned the project completely. The idea is finished. Buried. Dead. In return, UEFA will not pursue further action over the club’s role in trying to create it.

With that, one of the most sordid episodes in modern football has finally come to an end. In truth, it has ended in the only way it was ever going to end.

From the very beginning, some of us argued that the Super League was doomed. At the time, we were told repeatedly that the architects would not go away. We were told they would keep pushing until they got what they wanted. The narrative insisted that the project was inevitable.
