Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has backed Harvey Barnes' decision not to switch international allegiances to Scotland - and has backed the Newcastle United winger to compete for a place in the England World Cup squad.

Scorland boss Steve Clarke has been no secret of the fact he would like Barnes to join up with his group, with the Burnley-born forward qualifiying through a grandparent.

Barnes did win one England cap in a friendly match against Wales in 2020, and his indicated that he is not interested to changing international colours to Scotland.

With so much talented competition for a place in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, including Newcastle team-mate Anthony Gordon, it's a brave decisiuon, and one that Shearer admires.

And he's not ruled out the 28-year-old from forcing his way into plans, if he continues his current excellent form for Eddie Howe's Magpies.

"I think Harvey Barnes was right to snub Scotland," Shearer told Betfair.
