Guimaraes went down in the closing stages at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in obvious discomfort and was unable to continue after an assessment from Newcastle’s medical staff.

He hobbled off and was clearly in pain as he was helped around the perimeter of the pitch, and while he joined in the post-match celebrations in front of the travelling fans, he remained concerned about the state of his hamstrings.

He will be assessed within the next 24 hours, with Howe admitting he is concerned at the prospect of being without his captain for a prolonged spell.

“I’m not sure how he is, but I think he’s a little bit worried,” said the Newcastle boss, whose side climbed back into the top half of the table thanks to their third Premier League away success of the season. “He’s said he’s never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp or was it a muscle problem?

“It probably feels like it was more of an injury to me, but let’s wait and see. We’re trying to stay positive at this moment.”
