One of the interesting things about Martin’s current time at Celtic, both before and after the Wilfried Nancy episode, is that he has largely stuck with the same tactical framework used by recent Celtic managers.

Whether you call it a 4-2-3-1, a variation of a 4-3-3, or something in between, the structure is essentially the same. It is a system built around one central striker and has become synonymous with the Celtic way.

That is why I was interested today to see one of the Celtic sites asking whether we might be about to see a tactical shift. The suggestion was a move back to a two-striker system, similar to the one Martin O’Neill used so successfully in the past.

There is logic behind that idea. The Celtic team were often at their most dangerous with two forwards. Until recently, however, Martin simply did not have the personnel to make that work. Now, if you include Maeda, he effectively has four options for the central roles.
