Trying  to navigate his way through choppy waters when he arrived at Celtic last week, Martin O’Neill had done a decent job of steadying the ship.

Reeling off back-to-back victories over Falkirk and Rangers while booking a place in the Premier Sports Cup final, his restorative powers had a calming effect on the domestic front.

But he is not a miracle worker. Back in continental action against an FC Midtjylland side who sit top of the Europa League, Celtic were brutally ripped apart.

In what is proving to be a thoroughly miserable European campaign, they were left with a sinking feeling after being comprehensively dismantled by the Danes.

O’Neill’s side trailed 3-0 by half-time after an opening 45 minutes which exposed the inadequacies of Tony Ralston, in particular, and the rest of the backline.

At that point, with Midtjylland threatening to score almost every time they ventured forward, it carried echoes of the 7-1 Champions League humiliation at Borussia Dortmund last season.
