Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has lifted the lid on Anthony Gordon's injury woe after he left the pitch with a hip injury against Athletic Bilbao.

Gordon was withdrawn five minutes before the break, with Jacob Murphy replacing him against the La Liga side. The £40m man went off against West Ham on Sunday with a similar issue with the original injury dating back to March at Wembley, when he went off after a whack in a World Cup qualifier against Albania.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "I have not had a full rundown from the medical team. But it seems like a recurrence of the hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks.

"So we will assess that and see what happens."

Whether Gordon is risked on Sunday at Brentford remains to be seen, but with England having two World Cup qualifiers after the weekend against Serbia and Albania, his chances of selection for the Three Lions remains in...
