Wigan kicked off their Sky Bet League One campaign in style with a commanding 3-1 victory over Northampton at the Brick Community Stadium.

The home side's early dominance was rewarded on the half-hour mark when Joseph Hungbo's cross was volleyed home by Fraser Murray on his debut.

After Cameron McGeehan headed against the outside of the post for Northampton, Wigan doubled their lead two minutes before half-time with Jensen Weir nodding home a Hungbo corner.

Only a superb save from Lee Burge - who had earlier tipped a Murray free-kick round the post - prevented Weir making it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.

But Wigan were not to be denied, and Murray notched his second and Wigan's third 15 seconds after the restart to effectively seal the points.

Northampton pulled one back with 20 minutes to go when Michael Forbes headed home from close range.

And Wigan were indebted to Sam Tickle for making a brilliant save to deny Elliott List.

Wigan finished the game strongly, however, and should have added more goals, only for Dara Costelloe to head wide from a yard and substitute Paul Mullin fired straight at Burge when clean through.
