Andrey Santos’ rise at Chelsea reached a new stage this week. The Brazilian midfielder scored his first goal for the club in the 4-3 win over Wolverhampton in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Globo Esporte, the former Vasco player said that Enzo Maresca’s system has allowed him to rediscover his attacking instincts.

“The first goal is always very special,” Andrey said. “I’d been trying for some time, but something was always missing. Maresca gives me freedom to arrive in attack as a surprise element, like I did at Strasbourg. This time, it worked, and I’m happy to help the team.”

Freedom and confidence under Maresca

The 21-year-old has played in 11 of Chelsea’s 14 matches this season, confirming his growing importance under Maresca. His goal on Wednesday came when he arrived at the edge of the box to finish with his left foot. It resembled his time at Strasbourg, where he scored 11 goals and provided four assists.

“I work hard every day to evolve, to understand the game better and to improve my weaknesses,” he explained. “It’s been a special start to the season. I hope to grow and continue this process.”
