EDDIE HOWE is hoping Newcastle United will be in a position where they can make additions during the January transfer window, claiming that freshening up the squad will be one of his key aims at the turn of the year.

Having spent most of the last two or three years treading a fine line to ensure they did not breach the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, Newcastle’s financial position was transformed when they banked a British record £125m fee from Liverpool for Alexander Isak.

While the Magpies made significant financial outlays of their own in the summer, the Isak sale means they should be in a strong PRS position for the next few transfer windows.

As a result, while he does not see any gaping holes in the current squad, Howe is nevertheless keen to use the January window to refresh Newcastle’s first-team group.
