Shane Duffy had reacted to a fan's criticism of Liam Manning staying on at the club

Norwich City footballer Shane Duffy has been reprimanded by his manager for derogatory comments he made to a fan on social media.

The centre-back used insulting words while responding to a supporter's criticism on X after Tuesday's 0-1 defeat to Derby County - the Canaries' seventh after 11 games, which put them in the Championship relegation zone.

The 33-year-old has since apologised for his outburst, and said it came out of "frustration, not a lack of respect for supporters".

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Liam Manning said: "The positions we are in and the responsibility we hold - irrespective of our opinions and what we think - you can't come out and say that."

He added that Duffy had been dealt with "internally".

Posting on X on Wednesday, Duffy said: "It's been a tough period, and seeing the criticism towards the team has been hard.

"We have to accept the criticism right now.
