Former Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is poised to take the reins at Panathinaikos, making him the highest paid manager in Greek football history.

The ex-Liverpool and Chelsea boss has been jobless for over a year since his dismissal from Celta Vigo in March of 2024.

Despite leaving the Spanish club just two points clear of the relegation zone, he's now set to embark on his 17th managerial role.

Greek media reports suggest that Benitez is on the verge of signing a two-year contract with the Athens-based club.

The Greek heavyweights currently occupy seventh place in the 14-team Super League Greece, having secured nine points from six matches.

This leaves them eight points behind league leaders PAOK, albeit with a game in hand.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf reports that the record-breaking £3.47million contract was agreed upon during negotiations in London on Sunday evening with club president Giannis Alafouzos. Panathinaikos have not tasted league success since 2010 and have only clinched the title twice this century, reports the Mirror.
