WATFORD have sacked manager Paulo Pezzolano despite picking up seven points in their last three matches and sitting 11th in the Championship.

Hornets have immediately replaced him with former boss Javi Gracia, who led them to the FA Cup final and an 11th-place Premier League finish in 2019.

Watford beat Hull City and Oxford United 2-1 in the week before the international break, with those results sandwiching a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth, moving them just three points behind fifth.

Despite positive results, Pezzolano had reportedly lost the support of his players, while supporters had indicated that they wanted a change.

A club statement said: "Watford FC are delighted to confirm the return of Javi Gracia as head coach after deciding to part ways with Paulo Pezzolano and his backroom staff, whom we thank sincerely for their efforts and commitment during their time in charge. We wish them every success."

Saints drew 2-2 with Pezzolano's side at Vicarage Road earlier this season, having taken the lead twice through Cameron Archer and Ryan Manning.
