UEFA have reiterated their opposition to domestic league games being played abroad in light of controversial claims previously made by Liverpool chairman Tom Werner. President of the governing body Aleksandar Ceferin warned that playing overseas would "disenfranchise loyal match-going fans".

The American chief has previously stated that he was "determined" to see English top-flight football matches played in New York, as well as fixtures being moved to different parts of the world. Italy and Spain's football federations have both unveiled plans to stage matches in Australia and the United States, which would see AC Milan take on Como in Australia and Barcelona face Villarreal in Miami.

Monday's announcement from UEFA saw permission granted for the respective Serie A and La Liga fixtures to be played overseas but described the decision as "regrettable" as Ceferin offered a blunt warning to supporters.
