Peterborough United winger Cian Hayes will be out of action for several months with a serious knee injury.

The 22-year-old damaged knee ligaments during training in the lead up to Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Lincoln City in League One.

Hayes has made 54 appearances for Posh since arriving from Rochdale in the summer of 2024 - 11 of them this season, scoring twice.

"He's picked up a really bad injury, he'll be out for months," boss Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "He went for a shot, it got blocked and opened his knee up.

"We missed him because he's one that can beat people and his impact in coming on in games is very good, always has been since he's been here.

"We'll try to keep his spirits up but it's a real blow for the boy because it is a long time he's going to be out for."

The loss to Lincoln left Posh next to bottom of League One, with just seven points from 10 games.

They are away to Bolton Wanderers next Saturday.
